Year 10 Science Student Outcomes 2021
10.1 Working Scientifically – Investigating Science
1. What will I investigate?
1.1 Formulate a question and hypothesis that can be investigated scientifically.
2. How will I collect data in a fair test?
2.1 Select and use relevant secondary-source data (e.g. research journals) to gain background understanding of the question.
2.2 Select appropriate first-hand investigation method(s), e.g. fieldwork, experiments, to collect reliable data.
2.3 Specify, and justify the need for:
a) a control (as appropriate);
b) dependent and independent variables.
3. How will I carry out the investigation?
3.1 Identify and access appropriate equipment (non-perishable, e.g. beakers) and materials (used up, e.g. chemicals) for the experiment(s).
3.2 Select equipment to collect and record reliable data or information, eg thermometers, data loggers.
3.3 Assess the risks and address ethical issues associated with the methods.
4. What should I do with the results?
4.1 Organise data and information using appropriate methods such as diagrams, tables, models, spreadsheets and databases.
4.2 Carry out relevant mathematical operations, and use appropriate symbols and units.
4.3 Describe relationships, and analyse patterns and trends between independent and dependent variables.
4.4 Use knowledge of scientific concepts to develop evidence-based arguments and draw conclusions consistent with the data.
4.5 Assess validity and reliability of the data, identifying possible sources of error.
4.6 Identify whether the data supports or doesn’t support the hypothesis of the investigation, giving evidence-based reasons.
4.7 Use clear, logical and appropriate scientific language, conventions and representations to produce an investigation logbook, poster report and 3-minute oral presentation.

What scientific question are they trying to answer?
How would you test it to ensure a fair test (valid)?
What outcome do you expect? How do you know?
