4. Use of this knowledge
17. Outline a range of biotechnology techniques.
18. Research a particular biotechnology technique.
19. Discuss issues (social, ethical) associated with the use of biotechnology.
20. Develop skills to analyse the validity of secondary sources.
21. Use the ABCDE Scaffold to assess secondary sources.
22. Identify the role of scientists in the research & development of our understanding of genetic diseases and applying biotechnology.
Research is in various stages, testing has already started, and technologies are well-established in many areas of biotechnology that were once considered to be science fiction - impossible.
From in vitro fertilisation ("test-tube babies", actually a petri dish is used) to cloning - making an exact replica of an animal from one set of genetic material (parent) instead of two, selecting babies by sex, and many others. There is, however, much debate among scientists and politicians around how far we can or should take genetic engineering.
Where did it begin?
Listen to the words in the following song video: "In the Year 2525" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQB2-Kmiic. None of these could have been achieved in 1969, the year this song was released.
Draw up a table of year and 'prediction'.
Discuss: Should the sequence be rearranged? How likely is each event?
