12. Outline Mendel’s monohybrid experiments and the discovery of dominant/recessive traits (time permitting/ extension).
13. Explain the process of dominant/recessive inheritance.
14. Solve problems on inheritance using Punnet squares.
15. Use the terms genotype, phenotype, allele, dominant, recessive.
16. Interpret Pedigree charts on inheritance. (extension: construct Pedigree charts)
People may wish to know the genetic history of a family, or a particular genetic trait. They use a family-tree-style diagram, called a pedigree, to represent the genotypes and phenotypes of individuals. Using this, geneticists can often work out the pattern of inheritance of the trait, and other useful information such as the possibility of a baby inheriting a given genetic condition.
By definition: A pedigree chart is a diagram that shows the occurrence and appearance of phenotypes of a particular gene or organism and its ancestors from one generation to the next, most commonly developed for humans, show dogs, and race horses.
